The Reconstructive Support Fund (RSF) recently expanded its advocacy efforts by co-hosting a powerful three-hour radio show at the Tshwane University of Technology aimed at creating awareness around disability, access to healthcare, and the challenges faced by people living with treatable disabilities in South Africa.
The radio discussion created an open platform for honest conversations about the realities many families face when trying to access medical care, surgery, rehabilitation, and support services for children and adults living with disabilities. During the show, RSF shared real stories from communities the organization has visited, including outreach work done in Alexandra Township, where many families were found caring for children with disabilities without adequate support or information.
The programme also highlighted the importance of education and community awareness. RSF explained how many people in disadvantaged communities still do not fully understand different types of disabilities or where to seek help. This often results in children with treatable conditions remaining hidden at home without receiving the medical attention they need.
Listeners were encouraged to become more compassionate, informed, and involved in supporting people living with disabilities. The show also created awareness about the role RSF plays in identifying surgical candidates, advocating for medical intervention, and restoring dignity and mobility to individuals through reconstructive support.
By using media platforms such as university radio, RSF continues to amplify the voices of underserved communities while educating the public about disability inclusion, healthcare access, and the urgent need for partnerships and support. The radio engagement was an important step in building stronger community understanding and inspiring future collaboration with students, healthcare professionals, and local organizations.
The Reconstructive Support Fund (RSF) recently attended a High Tea event hosted by a Catholic church in Alexandra Township in support of Cancer Awareness Day. The event brought together community members, women, caregivers, and local supporters to promote awareness, unity, and compassion around health-related challenges affecting vulnerable communities.
RSF participated in the event to create awareness about disability, reconstructive surgical needs, and the work the organization is doing to support children and individuals living with treatable disabilities. The gathering provided an important platform to engage directly with the community, listen to their experiences, and educate attendees about the importance of early medical intervention, inclusion, and access to healthcare services.
During the outreach, RSF also observed the urgent need for continued community education around disability and medical conditions. Many people approached the organization seeking help for various health challenges, highlighting how limited access to information and healthcare support remains a major issue in underserved communities.
The event was filled with meaningful conversations, encouragement, and solidarity as community members came together not only to support cancer awareness but also to uplift one another through compassion and understanding. RSF is grateful to the Catholic church and the Alexandra Township community for welcoming the organization and creating a space where awareness, hope, and support could be shared.
Through partnerships and community outreach initiatives such as this, RSF continues to work toward building informed communities and improving access to life-changing medical support for vulnerable individuals across South Africa.
